On Sunday, November 11, 75 alums and their guests converged on Newark City Hall to meet with Matt Klapper ‘11, Chief Policy Advisor to Mayor Cory Booker ‘97, and Adam Zipkin, Deputy Mayor and Director of the Department of Economic and Housing Development, for a talk on "How to Build an Urban Renaissance." Our hosts shared some of Newark’s success in attracting jobs, development, and visitors to the city, including Newark’s “Clean and Green” program that hires formerly incarcerated individuals to work reclaiming vacant lots for community gardens; and Newark’s First Source program that provides a hiring period for residents for available city jobs. A quick tour of Mayor Booker's office was followed by a walk to downtown Newark. Many stayed for lunch at Dinosaur BBQ and afterwards a few joined Matt for a tour of the Ironbound District. Thanks to Ilya Podolyako ’09, Matt and Adam for making this a successful YLS event.
